Good point: exponential growth in intelligence may "only" lead to linear progress in, or diminishing returns to, wellbeing. But this is not a law: we will see multiple exponential explosions when we expand the adjacent possible to reveal an endless orchard of low-hanging fruits.

The real world abounds with recursively self-improving systems, but one in particular deserves attention: Science, modeled as a system (perhaps even as an agent, with goals and resources). If you want to really understand AI RSI, science should be your reference point.

Apparently, when the philosopher Richard Rorty made his turn to neo-pragmatism complete in his second monograph, his one-time teacher and friend, the philosopher of science Carl Hempel, considered it such a betrayal that the relationship ruptured and (afaict) never recovered.
